You can come to know Christ through His presence in your soul

"How long a time have I been with you, Philip, and you have not known me?""' Since our Baptism, the indwelling has been a fact in our lives, a fact that only mortal sin can repudiate, but to how many of us has it been a conscious reality? Have we grown in our apprehension of Christ within - have we "known" Him? It seems that, right up to the end, the Apostles, expecting the victorious Messiah, mistook the essential

It is possible for us, like the Apostles, to get no further than the Miracle Worker, the Teacher, the Leader. As the Apostles got no nearer than what their senses told them of Christ, than what their affections responded to, so the tendency with us is also to stop on in the apprehensions of sense when all the time we should be searching in the spirit.

Until Christ left them so as to come to them at another level, He was not fully "known" by even His closest friends on earth. "It is expedient therefore that I go, for if I go not, the Paraclete will not come to you.""' Now, with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit - His own Spirit - in the human soul, Christ is made known as He wishes to be made known.

But when we have said all that we can say about the grace of divine indwelling, we come back to what Revelation itself says about it. In the discourse following the analogy of the vine, and in speaking of the true vine, our Lord is preaching nothing else but the doctrine of mutual indwelling; we have the words of Christ's prayer to the Father: "The glory which Thou bast given me I have given them.... I in them and Thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one ... that the love wherewith Thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them.""

"As many as received Him, He gave them power to be made the sons of God, to them that believe in His name, who are born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us ... full of grace and truth."".
